First Aid, Safety, & Repair Parts/Tools

I took the following first aid items with me on the trip, after each item I have listed a note about usage and whether I would take the item again.

  • 6 – Benadryl tablets: I did not use these but am allergic to bee stings, would take them again
  • bee sting Epi-Pen: see note above
  • 2 packets – Sting & Bite pads: would NOT take them again
  • 25 – 200mg Ibuprofen: I used these frequently for a knee issue, would take 100 next time
  • Tums: I did not need these, would take them again
  • 5 packets – Antibiotic Ointment: I used three of these: would take them again
  • 6 miscellaneous size band-aids & 2 gauze pads: I used these, would take them again
  • 1 conforming stretch bandage: I used this on someone else, would take it again
  • tweezers: I did not use this, would take it again
  • 3′ surgical tape: I did not use this, would take it again
  • 3 packets – Antiseptic Wipes: I used these, would take them again
  • 2 packets – Iodine pads: I did not use these, would NOT take them again
  • magnifier: I did not use this, would NOT take it again
  • Carmax lip balm: I used this in hot sunny weather, would take again
  • 12 insect repellant wipes: I did not use this, would consider the location of another trip as to whether or not to take them
  • sun tan lotion: I used this, would take it again
  • eyeglasses prescription card: I did not need this, but would take it again.
  • Note: I did not need anything else, so at this point, I don’t think I would add anything to the list.

I wore a RoadID safety bracelet on the trip. It lists contact phone numbers, brief medical history, and other information. It seemed like a good idea to me; I was surprised how many other bikers had them on, also. I would wear it again.

I took the following repair tools/parts with me on the trip, after each item I have listed a note about useage and whether I would take the item again.

  • 2 – Q-Tube 20” x 1.25-1.5” tubes: I used one of these, the length and location of the next trip would determine taking 1 or 2
  • 2 – Q-Tube 26” x 1.5-1.75” tubes: see earlier note
  • 2 tire levers: used these, would take them again
  • 3 Velcro tire wrap straps: I did not need these for removing the Schwalbe tires, but did use them elsewhere, would take them again
  • tube repair patches & tube of glue: I used these, would take them again
  • FiberFix spoke repair kit: I did not use this, would take it again
  • 2 spare spokes/nipples for each side of front/rear rims (8 total): these were not used, would take them again
  • rear derailleur cable (tandem): I did not use this, would take it again
  • mini-crescent wrench: I used this, would take it again
  • 4, 5, 6, 8 mm allen wrenches: I used these, would take them again
  • 2 screwdriver tips from a multi-tool: I used these, but they were not as handy as I hoped, would take some other form of screw drivers
  • Topeak chain tool: I did not use this, would take it again
  • three sections of chain & 2 – SRAM 9 spd quick links: see note above
  • Park Tool black spoke wrench: I did not use this, would take it again
  • 6 assorted tie wraps: I used several of these, would take them again
  • assorted nuts/bolts/washers: I used several of these, would take them again
  • 1 small section of old inner tube: I used 2 small pieces of this, would take again
  • 3′ electrical tape: I used some of this, would take it again
  • 3′ duct tape: I used some of this, would take it again
  • 3′ bailiing wire: I used this on two ocassions, would take 2 shorter sections next time
  • spare Garmin Edge 800 mount & 4 O-Rings: I did not use these, would NOT take them again
  • small bottle 3-in-1 oil: I did not use this, would NOT take it again
  • small bottle Finish Line Dry Lube: I used this, would take it again
  • eye glasses repair kit: I did not use this, would NOT take it again
  • sewing kit: I used this once, would take it again
  • tent & air mattress/pillow repair kit: I did not use this, would take it again
  • small Swiss Army knife: I used this frequently, would take 2 next time
  • paper towel: I used this, would consider taking a small wash cloth next time
  • Note: I did not need anything else, so at this point, I don’t think I would add anything to the list.
  • Note: I carried everything in one compact bag. Next time I will carry the basic repair items (tube, patch kit, tire levers, repair tools) in one pouch, and everything else in a second pouch.
